Koren (2017) for violin, piano, and percussion was specifically composed for my close friend and colleague Zoran Dzorlev for his concert that marked 40 years of his music career. The concert was held at the Macedonian Opera and Ballet (MOB) in Skopje, Macedonia on the 13 December 2017.
Zoran Dzorlev (violin), Petar Jovanov (piano), Ratko Dautovski (cajón).
Program Note
The title of the piece ‘Koren’ in English translates to ‘Root.’ This piece employs multiple time signatures that are characteristic to traditional Macedonian folk music such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8. Also, mixed groupings are employed in the shifting time signatures to create unpredictability, and a transitional smoothness that works with subtle character.
