Program Note
‘Nightingale’ was composed in collaboration with my colleague Ljupco Stojcevski. The harmony and several melodic motifs were composed by Jovanov while Stojcevski, designed the stucture, ornamentation and invented several additional melodic fragments drawing on influences from Macedonian folk music. The piece also consists of three improvisational sections based on the harmony. The title ‘Nightingale’ was given because the clarinet to the two composers resembles the singing of a nightingale. Furthermore this bird is found in Macedonia and numerous Macedonian folk songs draw on the nightingale as a metaphor.
